About Encounter Awareness & Defense

In today’s world, violence is commonplace – and sadly is still growing. Every year violent crime increases, gang activity is becoming increasingly harder to control, and we have reached the point of living through horrid acts of terrorism on U.S. soil. Pick up your local newspaper on any day and you will usually read that someone had been attacked, kidnapped, robbed, shot, stabbed, or sexually assaulted – sometimes close to your own residence, workplace or school!

When faced with these situations, it is sometimes necessary to use force to defend yourself or the ones you love. The problem lies in that when a life threatening attack arises, the victims are often untrained and react improperly (if at all) resulting in their own injury and/or death. Others put their lives in the attacker’s hands on the assumption that the attacker will keep his "promise" not to hurt them if they cooperate.

An easy solution is not only to seek proper training to react to attacks, but to be trained to recognize warning cues to allow you to get out of dangerous situations before they happen. Encounter Awareness & Defense can provide you with the tools we hope you’ll never have to use. All of the physical techniques taught at EAD are designed to be reactionary in both high and low threat situations. Students are taught to use leverage & re-direction of force over strength to end an attack -allowing a "would be victim" to go home in one piece. Anyone can be properly trained to effectively defend themselves and increase their chances against weapons and multiple attackers. EAD strongly focuses on using physical defense as a LAST resort. Through the course, students will learn how to recognize signs of aggressive behavior through interpretation of facial micro-expressions and body language. This will develop stronger "gut feelings" allowing the student to distance himself / herself from trouble before it occurs.

Learning a practical self defense not only protects you, but your family/friends for generations to come. Even if YOU never get attacked, you can pass on this necessary knowledge to others (children / friends) to prepare them for that ONE time they may need it.......

Standard Seminar (approx. 2 hours)

EAD’s signature seminar consists of a "crash course" of EAD training. The student will develop a working knowledge of street applicable self defense techniques consisting of escapes, strikes, joint locks, ground defense, multiple attacker and weapons defense. In addition, the instructor will show you how to use improvised defensive weapons within your immediate reach (keys, pen, hairbrush, etc.). The practical application is mixed with knowledge of the body’s reactions under stress (adrenaline, tunnel vision, etc.), knowing your surroundings, and interpretation of an attacker’s body language and micro expressions.

Cost: $300.00
Parental Seminar (approx. 90 min)

This seminar is designed for people who wish to learn to defend themselves if attacked while holding their child/infant. Among other techniques, students will learn how to securely hold their child with one arm – thus keeping the other free for defense. Stranger Danger Seminar (approx. 1 hour)

This seminar is designed for children ages 4 to 6 (one class) and 7 to 12 (one class). Instructors will provide a fun, interesting class while providing practical training for your child. Head Instructor and Qualifications:

Jack Pettengill has been involved with the martial arts since his early teenage years in Michigan and has studied a variety of systems. He began studying at several martial arts schools at his home near Detroit, MI, but could not find a school that effectively taught a style that could be used outside competition or the dojo. In 1989, Mr. Pettengill located a school based in Sarnia, Ontario that advertised martial arts "for the street." The school – Paul Bonner’s Professional School of Self Defense – taught exactly what Mr. Pettengill was looking for and introduced him to the styles of Chinese Shaolin Kenpo and Daito Ryu Aikijutsu. It also allowed him the honor of being a student of Mr. Bonner – a world renowned professional kickboxing champion and martial arts expert who had trained with Park Yip, Terry Stanton, and Wally Slocki – to name a few. Wally Slocki has trained with Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, and Bill "Superfoot" Wallace. After a few years, Mr. Pettengill left the school to pursue a career as a police officer and during that time was employed to teach what became a popular self defense class at Michigan State University. He currently holds 2 black belts in the styles of Chinese Shaolin Kenpo and Aikijutsu and continues to study.

During Mr. Pettengill’s 10 year police career, he continued to teach martial arts, was often recruited by local businesses and organizations to conduct self defense seminars and became defensive tactics instructor for his entire police department. He moved on from police work to graduate from Executive Security International – a school that specializes in personal protection (professional bodyguard) work and anti-terrorism. He is a Certified Protection Specialist and Anti-Terrorist with over 4000 hours of training logged through his martial arts, police and bodyguard careers and is a trained specialist in recognizing verbal deception and deceptive body language. Mr. Pettengill has protected corporate executives as well as celebrities such as country singer John Michael Montgomery, Paul and Michael Teutul of TV’s "American Chopper," Alex Ligertwood of Santana, Michael Monarch and Nick St. Nicholas of Steppenwolf, Aynsley Dunbar of Journey, Fergie Fredericksen of Toto, and Randy Hall of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
